I hope you read recently where VATSIM has announced a potential partnership with MITRE, a worldwide R&D and consulting firm that deals with airspace issues for the US and other governments. MITRE sees the potential to be able to use VATSIM's strength in being able to stand up a significant number of good pilots to use in their experiments.
This first event is the test for MITRE to lern about VATSIM events and for VATSIM to explore ways to deliver the results MITRE needs, basically pilots flying routes who know what to do. The test is about the routes being tested and that is the first goal.
Below you will find a full info release from Richard Jenkins. At the BoG meeting yesterday we decided the best way to hedge our bet at making sure we get a lot of high quality pilots is to leverage some of our more proficient VAs. Included is a link to the MITRE/VATSIM event sign up page. You register with your VATSIM ID and a password of your chosing, then answer a few questions for their stats. After you register, you can go to the routes page and select a route to fly. Note the callsigns listed are the ones MITRE would like all pilots to use (regardless of VA affiliation; your VA info can go in the FP comments), and they desire us to fly the aircraft listed and use the listed equipment code; i.e., FMS with RVSM, so be sure you can fly this aircraft with this equipment before taking the route. All times listed are local times.
There will be sigificant SUP resources on hand to ensure this executes well. There is a chance that a pilot may get disconnected if their flight begins to hamper the experiement; we're working on a web site so if that happens the pilot can go get info on why they were disconnected. Unless the pilot was competely out of line, there will be bo punitive actions for disconnects to support the experiment.
There is a new section in the VATSIM forum for support in this operation. Your VAs were selected to get an advance invitation to get the word out and get your best pilots signed up. There are about 480 total routes available from B777's to AC500's. In a few hours a general population NOTAM will go out and anyone will be able to signup for this event.
Your action: Get the word out to your pilots with the info on the web site and how to sign up. If you have questions let me know or hit the web site. Let's show VATSIM and MITRE the strength of the VATSIM VA Partners.

joined together to conduct aviation systems research using the VATSIM network as
a test environment for proof of concept and hypothesis testing of new ATC
solutions. In the near future you will be receiving additional information via
NOTAM about upcoming MITRE operations where VATSIM members will be asked to
participate in CAASD designed events in an effort to evaluate new concepts in
ATC operations.

Description of the event:
In order to simplify the use of the new departure fixes and create an
interesting traffic mix, MITRE/CAASD is providing a set of flight plans to be
used for this event. These flight plans were used in some of the original
airspace analyses; flying routes that use these new departure fixes requires
RNAV capable avionics and updated databases.
The set of flight plans has the following characteristics:
* About 480 routes are available. Callsigns and routes are unique.
* Departures within ZAU:
o only from ORD and MDW, 260 total departures
o scheduled in roughly 2 minute intervals over a two hour period
o ORD departure schedule models roughly 100 departures/hour
o MDW departure schedule models roughly 30 departures/hour
* Arrivals within ZAU:
o only destinations are ORD and MDW, 200 total arrivals
o maximum flight time is 2.5 hours
o scheduled in roughly 3 minute intervals over a two hour period
o ORD arrival schedule models roughly 80 arrivals/hour
o MDW arrival schedule models roughly 30 departures/hour
o departure times use estimates of total flight time to schedule
arrivals into MDW or ORD within the scheduled event

This year’s rally has a special twist for all of you in the form of mission planning for FSX and FS9. The Great Australian Air Rally will be 17 legs (4 or 5 each week) in the land of the Roo during the entire month of February. It will use FSX Mission programming for the pilots who want to use FSX and will provide ABL scripted Missions for those who want to use FS9. You will be tested in each of the 7 planes that will be used. This adventure can be flown off line or on line at any server you choose. We will provide the planes, weather, and the adventure. Registration will open at www.flydeervalley.com/gaar on January 1, 2008.
